The three-day dharna programme called by the BSNL Casual Mazdoor Union on the genuine demands of contract and casual workers was held from 10th to 12th June, 2026, before the CGMT Office at the CTO Building, Kolkata, with large participation from workers across West Bengal. The agitation highlighted key issues such as the retrenchment of 200 contract workers in the Electrical Wing, discontinuation of tenders by the CGMs of Calcutta Telephones and West Bengal Circles, and payment of CDA arrears to casual labourers pending since January 2025. The programme was addressed by Com. Sujoy Sarkar, Circle Secretary, BSNLEU; Com. Om Prakash, President, AIBDPA; Com. Tapas Ghosh, Circle Secretary, BSNLEU; Com. Tarak Kundu, Assistant Circle Secretary; and Com. Gautam Das, District Secretary. On the concluding day, Com. Animesh Mitra, General Secretary, BSNLEU, expressed full solidarity with the workers' struggle and urged the administration to resolve their grievances.
A similar agitation was organised in Calcutta Telephones under the banner of CTTMU, addressed by Com. Sisir Roy, Vice-President; Com. Pradipta Ghosh, Circle Secretary, CTTMU; and Com. Santosh Gupta of BSNLCCWF. Following the agitation, the administration assured the unions that discussions would be held on the issues raised. Simultaneously, BSNLEU CHQ pursued the matter with the CMD, BSNL, leading to discussions between the CGM, West Bengal, and the leadership of BSNLEU and BSNLCMU on 13.06.2026 for an amicable settlement. The successful agitation compelled the BSNL management to enter into discussions and negotiations with the unions, marking a significant victory for the contract and casual workers and reaffirming the strength of united collective action.
